Our one room schoolhouse day was fantastic! The afternoon began with a traditional one-room schoolhouse-style lunch outdoors. After lunch, the students had some free time outside, during which some children played stickball and others tried square dancing. Then, the children came inside, lined up outside the classroom, and entered to find that the desks were arranged in rows. They found their seats, girls on one side and boys on the other, and were introduced to the rules of the schoolhouse. They enjoyed lessons in reading (from their hornbooks and McGuffy's readers), writing (on slates and in script!), and arithmetic (How many cows does my papa have if he has 7 Jersey cows and 9 Holstein cows?). We continued with a one-room schoolhouse-style recess game of Pom Pom Pull-Away and a special project:making log cabins out of pretzels. Thank you for all of your help in getting your first grader ready for this special day!
